Sponsored Activities
The Martin Institute sponsors a number of student activities which are designed to complement the Institute’s mission. More information can be accessed on each one by clicking on the appropriate link. These sponsored activities include:
Model United Nations
The Model United Nations program (MUN). Institute staff teach a Spring semester class (IS 320) for students preparing to represent the UI at the national MUN conference in New York City during the week preceding Easter. The Institute also provides monetary support to help defray hotel and flight expenses, and arranges mission briefings with the Permanent Mission of the nation UI represents.
Martin Scholars
The Martin Institute inaugurated the Martin Scholar program in 2005 in order to help IS majors be more competitive for post-graduation employment and admission to graduate programs. Students selected as Martin Scholars become paid research interns working on major global issues. They work in groups of three or four on a predetermined topic, under the guidance of both a faculty mentor who is expert in the field and the Institute Director. They take a one credit class during the first six weeks of the Fall semester which focuses on the topic, following which they select a particular research topic that will then engage them for the rest of the academic year. A dedicated office is set aside across from the Martin Institute for use of the Scholars, who hold a minimum of two office hours each week. Each Scholar receives between $500 and $1000 for their work, which culminates in a public presentation of their research.
International Affairs Club
The International Affairs Club (IAC). Institute staff serve as advisors for this club, which meets weekly at the Martin Institute during the school year. The IAC organizes social and service functions, and discusses current events pertinent to the global communuity.
